Location and Climate of Temperate deciduous forest
The location of temperate deciduous forests are mainly found in eastern Canada, eastern United States, eastern Asia, and western Europe. They are above 23.5 degrees north latitude and between 23.5 and 38 degrees south latitude. In the summer the temperature averages about 70F. Summer months usually start in early june and end in late august. Winter usually doesn't start until december. Temperate in the winter is fairly cool. The ocean and wind are big factors of why the temperature and climate change so often.
Physical Features
The seasonal changes in this biome is very big. Temperate deciduous forest has four very different seasons and it also has a very long and warm growing season. The soil is enriched by fallen leaves that break down and provide nutrients.
Plant Adaptation
The plants grow in four to five layers in the temperate deciduous forest. The light penetrates the layers. There are trees called the american beech. The american beech tree is a tall and wide tree. The tree size is anywhere from 90 to 100 feet, and spreads 50 to 70 feet. The bark is grey and has a very smooth texture. This kind of tree does not like city living because of the carbon monoxide. Another plant from the deciduous forest is the Northern Arrowwood. This plant has dark green leaves that are in a oval shape. The fruits of the arrowwood are fleshy and blue/black in colour. The bark of this plant is grey and smooth. It grows from New Brunswick and southern Ontario.
Animal Adaptations
One kind of animal that lives in the deciduous forest is Coyotes. Coyotes can live almost anywhere. Their fur is a greyish colour. When there is a lot of pray around, coyotes will hunt either in pairs or alone. Within a few years coyotes kill most of the population of small mammals. Another animal is the american bald eagle. The bald eagle is a very large and fierce looking bird. Bald eagles will usually live only 25 years in the wild. Their nests are usually built near the water. They mainly eat fish and small sea birds. Another animal that lives in the deciduous forest is the Duckbill Platypus. Duckbill Platypus lives in the deciduous forest of Australia. It is about half the size of a house cat. The Platypus does not have teeth so for food it has to grind its food with grinding pads in its mouth. Their tails store fat for energy. They eat frog, shrimp, larvae, fish, and tadpoles.
